i have one strange problem and don't know if it's a postfix error or what
all clients are running ms outlook to retrieve/send mails
only one user is now for about two days not able to send mails - receiving works fine
the mails are stopped in the outbox folder and not passed to the postfix server
the user has configured 2 internet mail accounts - both for the same postfix
it was working fine until yesterday
any idea what could be the problem?

HINT: Check your logs:SET your log level higher
HINT: it's probably client side. Check his config.

Bye

Hi,

I'd agree with marsd... if its only one user its highly likely to be a client side problem. If the postfix server is on the same box as pop3/imap then there must be connectivity. You could try configuring Outlook Express (vs Outlook) as that allows you to trace the connection much more clearly than Outlook itself. Also, I have found that occasionally outlook email gets 'stuck' in the outbox and when you look it says 'not sent' so you just press send to close the email, press send/receive again and it transmits. Its probably not that but might be worth checking.

Regards

marsd - setting log level higher means increase the debug_peer_level value in the main.cf file?

ifincham - my bosses aren't allowing the use of outlook express - something with saving pst files or what, i don't know
- that resending is not working
- and it IS worth checking - the user is BIG BOSS, so it must be solved ;-)

Not exactly: In postfix there are a suite of programs that manage the various agencies. qmgr, etc..You can specify
the levels of verbosity in master.cf.
sample line:

#smtp inet n - n - - smtp -v

Assuming that you are using syslogd and
/var/log/mail you could also add a line in syslog.conf:

mail.err;mail.debug /var/log/warn

Good luck.
