hey, i am interested in replacing sendmail with postfix, i hear its easier, but in my cgi scripts that use sendmail, will it work? i imagine i have to change the sendmail path form usr/lib/sendmail to usr/lib/postfix, but is that it, does postfix recognize the sendmail commands the script throws at it?

I know that qmail is a seamless transition but I don't know about postfix. I'm going to guess that all MTAs would have to be compatible with sendmail or they would be setting themselves up for a short life. Almost all scripts that have a mail script use sendmail. Anyhows, I thought you had sendmail working and just had to set up a pop3 server.

oh Rhytym it never ends, i installed to the latest mandrake, and this time when i install sendmail it compiles for a bit then says "

Cannot determine hot to support Linux.2.4.8-26mdk.i686
"

i was hoping there would be a rpm of sendmail somewhere but no luck.

i used to be able to install sendmail form cd 3 of mandrake, but now my cd player only works once, as soon as i eject it it wont do anything after that.

I was hopping to goto postfix cause mandrake installs it by default. i think i saw qmail too though, so it will work with cgi scripts?

RedHat installs all it's packages via RPMs or SRPMs. SRPMs intall with source. I'm going to guess that Mandrake is much the same. You won't find an RPM version of sendmail because both distros configure the install to work with their own system. The problem with having to mount and unmount manually is a fact of life we may have to live with. My system will automount when I pop in a CD but somtimes will not let me eject with the button unless I unmount it manually first. You might try to have amd start at bootup to see if this changes for you. AMD is an automount deamon that will will try to load devices when it gets a signal. You might also want to check /etc/fstab to see if you have your cd-rom defined something like the following:

LABEL=/ / ext3 defaults 1 1
LABEL=/boot /boot ext3 defaults 1 2
none /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
/dev/hda3 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/cdrom1 /mnt/cdrom1 iso9660 noauto,owner,kudzu,ro 0 0
/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto noauto,owner,kudzu 0 0
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,owner,kudzu,ro 0 0

I have both a dvd and cd-rw so that's why I have a cdrom and cdrom1. When you reboot and amd loads, you will get an error saying no mount points defined. This is normal. It's just saying there is nothing in the floppy or cd drives. If you have a Disk Manager in your systems menu, I would create a launcher for it in the launch panel so you can get to it faster if you have to mount or unmount a device. Getting back to your sendmail install error, I think it doesn't like your kernal.

lol i know if i can figure out the mount thing I can install sendmail off the package.

so i take it this AMD is not a default demon. when the drive dies, i have a cd shortcut on my dektop and i right click it and go mount it says error drive used and if i press eject it just wont eject.. i cant even eject it from the harware button. I will see if i can install amd.. which folder would that config file be in?

I don't know where it would be on your system but you can open a term and type setup. This will start a text fersion of sysv. The go to system services. If amd is installed, just highlight it with the spacebar and you should see a star in the box. Cruise on down the list and see whatelse you want to start at bootup and you're on your way.

nope,no amd and no option to install it from the cds.. syas something about mtab in the error though

im just gonna reinstall mandrake and choose every dam piece of software they have... it seemed to work alot better when i did that.

Praise the Lord!! You can alway us rpm to uninstall packages later if you need the room. Once you get everything installed, make backups of both httpd.conf and sendmail.mc and then e-mail them to me if you have problems. I can help edit them for you or at least I'll be able to see what you're looking at when you ask a question. My e-mail address is john@nakremodeling.com . I know what you're thinking, but I assumed you'd use an outside e-mail account. :eek:)
