I just installed Red Hat 7.2 on my machine as the only OS. My troubles are right from the start. LILO loads, I choose linux, but almost every time I get:
Loading Linux
Block Move Error 0xAE
Boot:
I am at a loss as to what this means. If I keep rebooting, on the 4th or 5th time I can get in to the login. When I log in I get the Matt@Localhost Matt prompt, but I don't know how to start the GUI.
I'm sorry guys, I am very new to Linux and am very lost... Matt Wray

To start the GUI, type 'startx' at the prompt. If you want to boot directly into the GUI, you need to edit the /etc/inittab file and change the following line...

id:3:initdefault:

...to...

id:5:initdefault:

3 is runlevel 3, which is the command prompt. 5 is runlevel 5, which will boot you into the GUI, if this is what you want. I prefer to boot to a command prompt.

As far as the error goes, I'm not sure at this point. Try reinstalling lilo, by simply typing /sbin/lilo from the command prompt.

Apparently my troubles were stemming from my video. So I have tried to reinstall RH, but upon reboot it hangs at
LIL-. When I use a 95 Boot disk to FDISK, I am unable to delete one last partition that RH creates. Fdisk says that I cannot delete extended dos partitions with logical drives, but when I look at the logical drives there are none defined. I was going to try and use the RH FDISK, but I didn't understand any of it so I used the autopartition. I would like to completely wipe the HD and start over from scratch, butI can't figure out how to get rid of the last partition. Matt Wray

In order to get rid of the partitions with a 98 boot disk, you have to to delete all "Non-DOS Partitions". Select 3 and then 4, I think.

That is how I got rid of the other 3 partitions created by Linux, but the last one is not wanting to go away... Matt Wray

If you show me a screen shot of the DOS fdisk program where you are having trouble I can help you with that.

The easiest way to resolve this is to use Disk Druid during the RH73 installation. Its very easy to use. Just delete all the partitions and then create the partitions you want out of the free space. For a simple workstation, just create....

- 20MB ext3 partition mounted on /boot
- swap space equal to 2x your RAM
- the rest of the free space mounted on / formatted in ext3

Thanks again Chris. I was unsure what was needed with the partitions, I'll give that a try and see how it comes out! Matt Wray
