post 5.5 to 2K migration, unable to send from outlook

5.5 = exchange
2000 = exchangenew

i've used exmerge to merge the mailboxes of the users.

when i have my users connect their mailbox on exchangenew, their mail is there. however, mail is unable to be sent out. when sending a message, the message goes straight to the outbox, after some time the message leaves the outbox and goes to sent. unfortunately, i am unable to receive any of the messages sent through the exchangenew server. the 5.5 server is still up and running, both servers are within the same organization.

any help on where these messages might be going or how to get them to send/receive through the exchangenew server would be greatly appreciated.
