There are some wonderful threads already on the red X or non-display of gif images under IE. I am adding the workarounds I have used with success in the past, with liberal borrowing of the works of others, notably MSeng of this Forum.

XP Only. Some of these are diagnostic steps, so do them one step at a time rather than all at once. Test after each step to see if the gif issue is resolved. If so, stop right there.

1. Remove CuteFTP if installed
Test

2. Remove DAP if installed (Download Accelerator). Thanks to cntrybmpkin at DSLR:

Be certain in this case that the following registry entries are in fact removed:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PROTOCOLS\Name-Space Handler\HTTPS]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PROTOCOLS\Name-Space Handler\HTTPS\ZDA]
"CLSID"="{5BFA1DAF-5EDC-11D2-959E-00C00C02DA5E}"
"Pattern1"=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{5BFA1DAF-5EDC-11D2-959E-00C00C02DA5E}]
@="DownloadAcceleratorIE Class"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{5BFA1DAF-5EDC-11D2-959E-00C00C02DA5E}\InprocServer32]
@="C:\\PROGRA~1\\DAP\\dapie.dll"
"ThreadingModel"="Apartment"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{5BFA1DAF-5EDC-11D2-959E-00C00C02DA5E}\ProgID]
@="DAPIE.DownloadAcceleratorIE.1"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{5BFA1DAF-5EDC-11D2-959E-00C00C02DA5E}\Programmable]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{5BFA1DAF-5EDC-11D2-959E-00C00C02DA5E}\TypeLib]
@="{5BFA1DA1-5EDC-11D2-959E-00C00C02DA5E}"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{5BFA1DAF-5EDC-11D2-959E-00C00C02DA5E}\VersionIndependentProgID]
@="DAPIE.DownloadAcceleratorIE"

3. MSeng's contribution:

Open the registry
- Browse to: \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PROTOCOLS\Name-Space Handler\
- Delete the 'http', 'https' and 'ftp' (leave the 'mk' key)

I forgot #4

4. Register the following dlls using Start, Run or copy and paste the following as something like "ie_reg.cmd"

regsvr32 urlmon.dll
regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Msjava.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Browseui.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll

Thanks Murray.

My hope was to create a single site for XP specific issues.

This one is very hard to beat.

Thanks again.

Bill:

Just a thought, but why don't you write this entire thread up as an FAQ?? Would be a quick easy way for people to get their answer (if they would only look) without having to do it again and again.. (like was done when Msblaster was causing havoc) !!

Just a thought !!

Murray

It is still too early. I am as I find them going to throw other workarounds. Perhaps when I feel more confident that the issue is being addressed.

Additional steps to try (excerpts from a FAQ on another board):

* Clear all the History and Temporary internet files.

* Turn off any running Proxy Server.

* Change encoding to Western European (Windows).

* Verify the following are checked under Tools-->Internet Options-->Advanced:
-- Play Animations in web pages
-- Enable third-party browser extensions
-- Show Pictures

* If you have installed Web Accessories for Internet Explorer, make certain the Toggle Images component is not being used.

*Change caching option to "Check for newer versions of stored pages" to "Every visit to the page".

* Open your Registry and check the keys below (start-->Run, type regedit.exe, press ENTER
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg Content Type should say "image/jpeg". Do the same for .jpe and .jpeg
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.gif Content Type should say "image/gif"

* Try eliminating the possibility that any download accelerators\pop-up killer\firewalls\AV programs are contributing to the problem. Norton Internet Security was a known cause when IE6 first came out -- reference
If disabling resolves the problem, then remove\reinstall the program.

* It's been suggested that unchecking "Use HTTP 1.1" and then selecting the "Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections" setting may help. This can be found under Tools-->Internet Options-->Advanced.
