Possible virus attack

When I booted my laptop this afternoon a cmd window popped up and I could barely see a bunch of stuff getting deleted; It took about 10 seconds. When all was said and done, I saw that all files (but not folders) were gone from my desktop. So I started poking around in my documents and settings folder and found that ALL FILES had been deleted from my user profile; the directory structure was left intact.

I was able to use Undelete PLUS to successfully backup alot of my important stuff, files on desktop, firefox bookmarks, thunderbird email, etc. So I don't think I've permanently loss lost anything terribly important, but still what a pain in the a$$.

Does anybody maybe know what I got hit by? Is it still possibly residing on my HDD? I'm thinking I should format and reinstall but just looking for some input or tips before I do.

nada. it only found a few cookies.
ZoneAlarm SecSuite didn't find anyting either.

This thing was weird. It ran as if it was a scheduled task to run once on next startup.

The way you describe sounds a like a homemade batch file. Id look around for any weird named ones. They end in the extension .bat. Most will be legit but in cases like this sometimes you just have to look and see if you find anything weird. Then just look it up and see if its legit.

yup. that was first order of business. nuthin. If it's worth mentioning I do have ZA set to log everything.

electronicsfreak I think has a good point. I did look exactly like how a batch does when running. can a .bat file delete itself when finished?

I did a windows search of entire hard drive for *.bat and nothing seems out of the ordinary. I found 73 bats and all were associated with my ArcGIS stuff.

I've spent a good portion of the night putting my docs&sets folder back together from the remnants I was able to recover with undelete plus. I've only tested firefox and thunderbird so far; lost a few emails due to slightly corrupted recovered files. On the whole, there was nothing won't be terribly missed or eventually recoverable (reinstallable), just a pain.
