MEdger had a great recent thread on possible Sidekick successors (Long Live Sidekick in the meantime...), one that he mentioned was C-Organizer, this is from his post:
"The most flexible card file templates still seem to be in C-Organizer [], (In fact they are completely flexible), as is the folder structure for storing data.
The user interface on this one is different to Sidekick, but I quickly got used to it.
Mainly PIM functions, but they added a phone dialler link as a response to user requests, along with vCal/vCard import.
No expenses function, but the notes pages can contain tables.
Sync with Palm and PPC are optional extras".
That thread evolved into some details on converting calendar files, so I thought I'd start a new thread on the C-Organizer topic as they have just release an new update (C-Organizer Pro version, now 3.6 from 3.5).
I really liked this program when I tested it out over a year ago, but there were some dealbreakers for me which I wrote the developer about and he FIXED those things in version 3.5 (seems a very responsive developer).
Now it's 3.6 (good to see it evolving and he mentions bug fixes and some speed improvements), I wonder if anyone has tried this newest version of the program?
I know in the past some complained about speed when loading / working with rather large databases, the developer mentions speed fixes and bug fixes with this latest version. This program I found to be pretty nicely configurable, has a global search (and of course with Sidekick you have to search each database individually and I tend to run about 25 databases / tabs at once).
I liked the way C-Organizer let you do a table view and then click on / sort by table columns (rather than the 3 fields sortable with Sidekick), that's one of the things he fixed in 3.5 was the ability to choose what column headings you wanted in table view, not just the 1st 5 fields or whatever came up in sequence.
Calendar etc looked "nice", but frankly my needs are 95% database. Notes wise, I didn't like the format all that much for the notes section of C-Organizer, but I didn't spend a lot of time trying to adjust the interface etc, but at least it has a notes section. (I'm using TDBN Pro for notes at any rate).
I'm socked into several work projects and can't do a real road test of the new (just released Jan 25th '07) version 3.6, if anyone is inclined to test it out (downloadable trial etc) I'd love to hear your impressions of it good or bad. Again my needs are largely databases, requiring custom fields which this program seems good at (and it has template saving / fields retaining abilities which is vital to me, was a terrible feature with Gem-X Do-Organizer, can't save your custom fields for future contact entries!).
Your needs will differ from mine, but I'm interested how others here take to this new version if you have time to test it out. In the meantime, we should have birthday parties for Sidekick. I'll have to find my original 2.0 etc and guess at how many candles to put on the cake...
Link for C-Organizer Pro;
Here's the "what's new" page:
P.S., the screenshots are out of date and don't show the program's actual flexibilities etc.
Using Sidekick 98 like an old mule, nice dependable workhorse...
