Linux can read NTFS. Solaris can't. Linux is open, and the source code is available. Would it be possible to recompile the source code that allows Linux to read NTFS, under Solaris x86?

Why has nobody tried that?

Samba's not much use if the disk containing the NTFS partition is in the same machine.

As you say, Solaris can't read NTFS directly. Solaris is also supposed to be "open" now.

Why don't you? I think you'll find it's not as straightforward as it sounds...

ANNIHILANNIC,

Ok, you mean it is not trivial to recompile the source code from Linux, to Solaris and make it work? Hmmm... I have no idea, but I thought it was just a matter of recompiling? You say that it is far more complicated than that, because noone has succeeded yet?

Has anyone tried to do that? Are there known problems, that I dont know of? Or?

*curious*

You say that no one has succeeded yet, but has anyone tried? As Annihilannic says, why don't you?

That is the question. Why hasnt anyone tried? It can not be, because noone has thought of it. So, what is the reason they havent tried? There must be a problem lurking deeper, than I know of? Does anyone know?

[ol 20][li]Because no-one particularly wants to.[/li]
[li]Because no-one in their right mind uses NTFS.[/li]
[li]Because the challenges outweight the benefits.[/li]
[li]Because the interfaces with the kernel in Solaris and Linux are not identical.[/li]
[li]Because they have better things to do.[/li]
[li]Because FAT16 and 32 can be read by both operating systems anyway.[/li][/ol]

Who knows, I could probably go on...

HAHAHAHA! Ok. Thanx. I will dig into this myself.
