Fairly simple to explain...for example:

I can get to XXXX XXXX XXXX.doc on a intranet.
I CAN'T get to this same file from the internet.

I can get to XXXX.doc from both. The problem seems to be with the formating of hexadecimal space (%20) between the space in the URL. Works fine, until you have to go threw a proxy.

INTERNET > PROXY > WEBSERVER will not work with spaces in the URL

INTRANET > WEBSERVER has no issues.....

Have you tried another browser; what proxy server are you using?

Carlsberg don't run I.T departments, but if they did they'd probably be more fun.

Spaces in filenames are never good practice, simply rename it!!

Are you trying to access a document on a webserver external to the orginasition that you work in, or are you trying to access a document remotely which resides on an internal webserver.

ie. are you dealing with a forward proxy or a reverse proxy?

I think the latter is the case?

i know I had a few issues setting up my apache reverse proxy as the 'mod_proxy_rewrite' did not quite cope with exchange's '%' and trailing slashes (or something like that from memory) causing it not to be able to open emails with a '%' symbol in the subject line.

There are workarounds for instances such as these, else try the updated libraries. As far as I am aware the apache reverse proxy OWA problem has been long fixed..

Else try what Grenage suggested and try another browser, or as gavm99 suggested remove spaces in document names either via deletion or using underscores..

Cheers.
