Possible modem problem 1

Using XP Pro. This morning, had an error message that said problem with modem or other hardware device. It would not dial out. Shut down and restarted and worked okay. But it disconnected once on its own and upon redialing was giving off an awful screech. I may or may not be imagining a slower loading of pages also.
It's a U.S.Robotics modem. Only about 6-8 months old.
Any suggestions appreciated.
