Possible for VB6 to read Excel for Database?

Hi,
Im about to start Visual basic 6 for the first time. Id like to know what formats i can store my database as.

ie

if vb6 presents a table of information. Is it possible for VB to be reading from an Excel file? or do i need to creat my own database. Im new to this and dont know where visualbasic stores or reads from a database.

could someone pls help me
