3 servers in domain. 1 mail (Exchange), 1 TS (MS Terminal Server), 1 File Server. All Win2K boxes. BackExec 8.6 is installed on File Server. Remote Agent is install for Exchange.

The problem is every 5-6 days, the file server locks up around the same time that my backup job is scheduled to start. The next morning I a have to hard reboot the machine. I check the event logs every morning after this happens, nothing unusal is being reported. The nights the server doesn't lock the backup runs fine.

The nightly backup includes all exchange info and file server data. System State is backed up manually every other week. The nightly backup also stops Norton Corp services prior to backup and restarts them after backup.

Some history of the network. A couple of months ago I started looking at this network. The tech previous to me had been dealing with failed backups for more than 6 months now. I have been able to get the backups successful on a consistant basis now (cept the 5-6 day lock up). I have made so many changes is such little time I do not know exactly what I did to fix the original problem. I know it had something to do with user rights and the amount of data being backed up. I was once told that the network started as a MS Small Business Server network with the SBS version of BE. Then they "upgraded" to real versions.

At this point I am really just happy with the fact that the backups are actually completing successfully, but I would like to figure out the lock up issue. Any suggestions would be great.

Thank you.

Hi,

I have had a similar problem. My server would reboot then crash during a Backup Exec v8.6 job. At first I thought it was a hardware error, but after much investigation, it seems likely that BackupExec is the cause...

In the end, I`m considering just using Windows Backup feature...

Thanks for your input. You didn't by chance try a newer version of BE did you?

no, just stuck to BackUp Exec v8.6.

It was recommended to me to apply the patches that Veritas distributes over its website. There are a few that apply v8.6 for all sorts of things....you might want to try that out...
