positioning with divs

I am pulling my hair out getting this layout! Is there a tutorial on the 'rules of css'?
Apparently I don't understand what relates to what.

I want my navigation buttons to line up along the top and my slideshow object to come just under, then immediately under that my little content. ( The image on the right is part of the background).
