I seem to get better cross browser results with floats and relative positioning than floats and positive/negative margins, to shift things around.

In general, am I better off using positioning than playing with margins?

-TIA

I would advise using floats over positioning, but I feel like margins are a completely different beast to both of the aforementioned. I myself hardly ever use any relative positioning, mostly because I do not need it. I however use margins extensively to create gaps or fill gaps in elements.

If you provide us with an example of using positioning over margins, we might be able to assist you.

I personally don't like using negative margins and do like to stick to floats and margins over positioning.
