Ports Issue

Hello All,

I was wondering if anyone knew how to monitor if the ports available on a server have become exhausted? I have a number of servers which have an app agent which need to communicate to a central server on a specific port range. From time to time I find that the agents do not talk without getting a lot of information regarding errors. I was wondering if the limitied number of ports may be an issue but have no way of confirming this.

I know of netstat buts only good for monitoring the current situation, is there anything I can set to see if the ports that are available were all in use?
 
I would google for Free Port Monitor. Many to choose from. Not sure which is best, so hopefully someone else will chime in.

I would also take a look at your application since I have seen some apps keep taking available ports without releasing them once their session/transaction has completed thus "exhausting" the available ports causing your other apps to experience a variety of issues
Best bet is to contact your application vendor and ask them if you can specify a port range that you can allow for the app.
 
netstat -ano or netstat -an are the only thing to use there. the trick is always that you have to look when the problem is actually occurring.
It sounds like what you are looking for is something that can tell you/show you about when it happened after the fact, and unless you want to sniff ports all the time (which can cause a big resource overhead depending on settings), then you are very limited in your options.

You could always kick off a scheduled task that runs netstat at a desired interval though...but again, resource overhead needs to be tested first.
