On a solaris 8 server , some ports have been left in use
they show up by netstat -a eg
xx-test.oursite.gov.uk.8160 netman6-sun.33108 24820 0 24548
0 CLOSE_WAIT

There is no apparent process using this port , but it's presence stops us running another process requiring same port.

Is there an easy way to free such ports.
Any help much appreciated. Thanks.

try the -p option to netstat, which should give you the PID for the process.

since you're in CLOSE_WAIT, the remote end has closed down, but your socket won't release it's resources. If you have the gnu version of fuser, as root you can run fuser -n (protocal) (port) to get a PID also
