Porting emails

I have a website setup with a hosting company, and I'm soon going to be moving to a new host. With my new host, I can register my domain (this will remain the same), and create the same email accounts that I have with my old host. However, I want to "port" the emails over from the current host, to the new one (so that when user's log into their account, they still see the historical emails that were sent to/from them).

Does that make sense and can anyone think of an easy method to do this?

If you're talking about a web-based e-mail client and the users are exclusively logging into their accounts on the web, I don't think you will be able to export/import. Most hosting companies probably wouldn't want to bother or risk security by having "foreign" mailbox contents imported into their systems.

But, to be sure, I'd contact their tech support and ask.

Your best bet might be to download the old messages to Outlook Express or Outlook or some other free mail program for just those messages that will be "stranded" on the old hosting company.

Yes, I am.

I've been thinking about this option. I wonder if I could set up a .pst for every user and download the emails to that. I could then either distribute their file to them, or (ideally) move those emails back up to the new host account. I don't know if the latter option is possible or not though?

Again - I think you're going to run into the problem of the provider not allowing any type of upload. Think about it - e-mail is a huge source of viruses, etc. Why would any provider trust you, even if they virus protection software, to upload something clean to their server. Not that you're a bad guy or have dirty e-mail, they just don't trust anybody.

The major problem with creating a PST for everyone is that now the old mail is going onto their local hard drive and they can only see it when on that PC and not away from it. Also, if the HDD dies, mail goes bye-bye. But, I don't know of any other solution.
