Me and my friend what to develop application smiliar to ebay. What would be better to use as a start point .NET portal starter kit or DOTNETNUKE? I heard that DotnetNuke is much better... Should we rather develop it from scratch?

If you are just using them as a learning curve, then why not use both?

If you are building your own application, you shouldn't try to adapt ones that already exist as examples (by all means use their examples to generate your own) as I imagine your system will have to do a lot more functions than those examples provide.

I thought that since those exaples have a lot of existing nice functionality (user validation, user profiles, tabs, HTML modules, mobile support) it would be easy to just change/hide the code and adopt it to our needs. The problem is that we do not want to be lost in other solutions... i guess I'm being lazy, but why did we invent wheel in the first place? :)
