I have a winnt 4 box setup for a vpn, on my router i have opened all the necessary ports to connect to the server 1723,upd ports i found from microsoft and i have upgraded the firmware for my router to enable ip 47 i think, the tunnel server option which i have pointing to the nt server. I check the status of the VPN connection with the nt soft. remote access admin, and it says initializing modem, the computer where im dialing from gives me a
'verifying user name and password' but times out after a while with error 721 remote computer did not respond, I can even ping the router from a remote computer giving me a reply but the vpn doesnt work, does anyone have any info on this? thanks in advance

hey,

i have had the 721 error for ever and think i have found the problem. There are a lot of firewalls/routers that do not properly pass the VPN traffic even if you have all the ports set up correctly. I couldn't even establish a VPN session out of my network because I was running a Linux firewall. I am running a Netgear FV318 firewall now also and it WILL properly pass the VPN traffic for Windows 2000, so I am sure it will for NT 4.0 also. I haven't yet tested the traffice incoming (i will soon), but I am sure it will work now.

Long story short, upgrade your router/firewall for the latest technology and it should work.

Good luck,
nt guru
