Hi,

Following the advice of PC Advisor, I ran a port scan using netstat -an at a command prompt and found port 110 open.

I checked with glocksoft.com/trojan_port.htm and it shows 110 as being ProMail Trojan.

Is this something I need to be concerned about? If so, what can I do about this. I've had virus software (Norton Anti Virus) installed ever since I've had my PC, so I can't see how a trojan could creep in.

Please assist.

Regards,
Jay/UK

Port 110 is used for POP3 Service. If you a running a Mailserver it is ok. to be open.

Just as a side note: Having an anti-virus scanner does not mean that you will never be infected, it means that virus known to the program will not affect you. New strains of virus could affect you the same as if you never had any anti-virus installed.

Hope this helps Wullie

Hi,

Thanks.

Yes, I collect my e-mail from POP server.

Thanks for your warning regarding anti-virus software, mine updates automatically each time I go on the web, so I thought I was totally safe !

If you are collecting email from a pop3 server, then you are probably not running the pop3 server yourself on your machine... so it could be a problem

Are you running firewall software ?
Can you log traffic going to port 110 on your machine and traffic coming from port 110 on your machine ? --------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi mate,

Possible solution is that your AV or firewall software scans incoming e-mail messages. I have heard about AV leaving port 110 open for this reason.

Hope this helps Wullie
