I'm trying to move our main number that is on one of our PRIs from one PRI to another (in the same city). However AT&T here in chicagoland is telling me that they can't do it because the PRIs are in different COs. Is there are way around this?

This may sound crazy... but what if I ported the number out of AT&T and back in... do you think I'd be able to do it then?

Thanks for your help
Brett

Are you moving to a different NPA-NXX? If so that's probably why since in Chicago long distance charges occur within different area codes and sometimes within different NXX as well. It's been a long time since I lived there but I recall that was the way.

Even if they cannot move the number (unlikely if it's in same calling area) they can route it to a different number at the destination (regardless of calling area)

Occam's Razor - All things being equal, the simplest solution is the right one.

Porting the number to another provider and back again is costly and a waste. You did tell them that you wanted to "port" the number, and add it as a DID to existing PRI service, yes? Even if they are different Rate Areas or COs, it can be done. I would escalate to a higher level, and/or seek the help of the PUC. All of Ameritech's CO switches have number portability! What does their tariff say or has this item been de-tariffed?

I would use RCF (Remote Call Forwarding) as a last resort.

do you have the same system at both locations?
do you have vpn voip connection between the two ?
if yes you should be able to point that did number at
location b with the equipment ....

In our area the embedded local exchange carrier (Verizon) won't move numbers between COs, but almost all of the CLECS will move a number anywhere within the LATA. Even with Verizon, I don't think it's a technical issue, but rather a tariff/policy issue.
