On my company's 4510R I want to create a port-channel. I go into config t and then type int port-channel61 (or port-channel 61). I get this error:

int port-channel61
^
% Invalid input detected at '^' marker.

What am I missing?

Try it with a space between port-channel and 61 . If you are in conf mode it should work, has to be a syntax problem.

what about "int po1"?

Are there any listed in your "show run"?

Maybe you have too many already - different IOSs support different numbers of them, but I think it's either 64 or 128.

I have tried a space between channel and the number but I get the same error.

Yes, there are others listed. I think we have between 10-15.

int po1, I will try that.

Nope, int po61 does not work. We have eleven port-channel groups.

This is very strange, is the syntax for creating a port-channel wrong?

Try going to the individual interfaces that will comprise the port channel and run the following command:

channel-group 61 mode xxxx

Where the xxx refers to the type of etherchannel you wish to create (on|LACP|PaGP). This should in theory create the port channel for you. Then you should also see the port channel interface created.

Another simple question is do you have access to make changes on the switch ? Can you configure other things ok ? If using username and password users can be restricted on what they can do , same can be said if you are using tacacs .just something else to check. The syntax looks fine and I have never seen anything like that.

Yes, I can make other changes as I have created port channel groups on this switch. I will ask about the restricted permissions...

Yes, I am in config mode. :)

Do a sh priv

/

tim@tim-laptop ~ $ sudo apt-get install windows
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Couldn't find package windows...Thank Goodness!

Can you believe it, going into the interface and typing channel-group 61 mode on created the port-channel? I don't understand the logic but it indeed worked.
