I am having a problem with connecting to port 1433 on my ms sql box. The SQL runs on XP PRO, for development purposes only. This used to work just fine.

I haven't used this model for a few months and I can't remember if this was post XP sp2 when it worked.
I also have this setup with a linksys wireless g card if that helps anything.

Well, I have exhausted my already limited knowledge of ports and come to all of you for help.

when I run telnet localhost 1433 from the command line I get a connection failed error. I have completely turned off the xp firewall and still have the same error.

As I mentioned this used to work fine. I am at the point were my last test will be to hard wire my connection instead of using the wireless card.

Does anyone have any suggestions of what to do when this attempt fails?

Thanks in advance.

XP Pro only allows 10 simultaneous TCP connections.... maybe this is your problem?

there arent any active connections.

I ran netstat -an and port 1433 is not on the list how do I add it to the list so it will listen for it?

Thanks for the helpLloydSev

Those are active connections... if you can't connect it won't be active.

Are you sure that SQL is monitoring port # 1433?

Also did you try 127.0.0.1 instead of localhost? It's worth a try.

In fact, from what I know I thought that SQL ran on port # 1434....

My bad.. it does listen on port 1433 via TCP, but 1434 via UDP.. I'd try connecting via UDP.

Apparently, this is an XP Service Pack 2 issue. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to google a solution.
I tried reloading sql, that didnt work.
Im actually going to remove XP sp2 to confirm that this is causing the problem.
