Pop3 "Unknown User" When User Exists

Our mail server suddenly started returning "Unknown User" errors when we log in via Pop3 with any username, even if the username exists on the server. What are common causes for this and how should we go about troubleshooting the issue?

If there are any additional details that would be helpful, let me know and I'll try to provide them.
