POP3, IMAP, SMTP 1

Hi.
I´m new to mail servers and would like to know if the following is possible:

1. Today my domains and mail accounts are hosted with an external ISP. I would like to create corresponding mail accounts in my LAN server and have the ISP accounts messages downloaded automatically to the LAN server accounts each 15 minutes, for example.
2. I also would like to create other accounts in my LAN for internal use only.
3. In my LAN I would like to have both POP3 and IMAP access to the accounts. IMAP for the workstations and POP3 for the Mobile Devices.

Is it possible? Does it at least make sense ?
Is it the best way? Wich programs would I need, and how can I start?
Any suggestion will be welcome...

In answer to your first question, I think fetchmail will do what you need. It can be set to poll several pop servers at any given interval. As for pop3 and imap, most linux distros come with those daemons. They run under xinetd and require no configuration. They just wait for a request to come in on their respective port (110 for pop3 and 143 for imap). When a request comes in, the username/password combo is checked and if everything is cool, any mail for that user gets sent to the user's local mailbox. You just need to have them start at bootup. For moving mail around, you can use sendmail as your mta. It can be configured to handle internal mail, external (intenet) mail or both. This is a little more com[lex so you might need to check

for the docs or the website of whatever mta you decide to use. Some say postfix is a lot easier to configure but I can't tell you. I only use the best. Once you get things setup, I'm sure you'll be back with a lot more questions. I'm sure we can give you more specific answers then. Good luck.

Think I will need a "bit more" time to do it than I thought...
I wasn´t sure if the mail servers would work as I thought. I will begin to follow your hints step by step to see if I can make it work.
