I am unable to recieve E-mail from a Mail Site POP3 server which is forwarding the messages to the Exchange server on our intranet.

The users have an account (user@company.com) on the POP3 server. the POP3 forwards them to the Exchange server as user@server.company.com. i have that entry in the Routing tab as: server.company.com <inbound>. The mailboxes have an SMTP entry for user@server.company.com. i have also tried user@company.com.

I've got a Microsoft Press Exchange 5.5 book that is useless and have not been successful in locating any information on the Microsoft site-- any help is appreciated.

Do you have a MX record for the server.company.com domain? Or does the POP3 server point directly to the Exchange server? Can you be more specfic on your current setup?

Yes it is pointed directly at the Exchange server. no domain is setup with any DNS servers for our intranet exchange server. only the E-mail and web server have DNS listings. there is an alias user@server.company.com assigned to the forwarding including the IP address as the target. does the authentication process come into play- wheither the SMTP or POP3 is enabled or not? I am getting some activity in the mailbox but i am not able to access it. My outlook client connects but cannot retreive these "Total No. Items" they do fluctuate- perhaps they are notices of some sort. i CAN send mail internally. but i am seeing alot of No. Items in the mailboxes, items that are not physically there on all of the boxes. is this any indicator of the problem? Make sure the <inbound> is in the correct format.
I am at home now and cannot check whether my
<inbound> is mail.xxxxx.com or just xxxxx.com

Also in the pop3 user list, make sure you are not
using an alias. My email is gra@abelson.com,
but gra is NOT my real pop3 account, its just
an alias.

When you say the SMTP...where, exactly
are you putting this? Generally, leave
email domain blank in Internet Mail Services,
in the General Tab.

Also the user name should only be in POP3
users...not in IMS.

Finally, if this is a new install, call Microsoft
Tech and give them you key number. Some
software comes with 1 or 2 free incidents.

THANK YOU Abelson!!! That did it. I had to have MAIL.server.company.com as the <inbound> entry. I cant tell you how much i appreciate that tip. now i can hit the next project.
