Pop ups don't load...Why?

Hi all, the past couple days I have been having problems with pop ups not loading. The window will appear but it freezes and will not load. I use internet explorer, I also run zone alarm & grissoft AVG virus protection. I have tried turning both off but it doesn't seem to help. At first it was sort of a blessing but there are pop ups I need to see. Any advice?
