pop up question

I have created pop up boxes when a button is Hit, but I will soon be having to have changing pop ups that may go for a week or so but may be numerous.
Question: How can I create a pop up for people just by giving them a link?
I know a dumb question but is there a way to do this without having a main html page appear for each of them? Maybe pop up a html page then shrinks? to a pop up sized one? ok i will stop!

How about using a function and then call that function when you need a link to popup?
