Hi,
I was investigating the network area and clicked on an item to find a description (the remote network avaliable)..decided I do not want to set it up, a wize move since I still don't know exactly what it is other than it is a network...NOw I've got pop ups every few seconds that won't stop no matter what I do> I checked the available networks, the start up programs etc. but don't know what to look for since there is nothing under the name or with the defination remote network> What a pain in the butt.
If anyone can help with this (pop up stoppers do not work) I'd be most grateful.
BTW I'm new to the forum and am very happy to have found it and to be here; hope to learn much from you guys!

try stopping the "messenger" service int ControlPanel/services

This is the controller for the "net send" command which issues the pop ups.

Chances are you have a PC on your network that is spamming these out or possibly the PC you are on. If you are behind a firewall you shouldn't be getting them if your firewall is configured properly.

Or... you could be talking about Browser pop ups, in which case run some spyware software like spybot search and destroy.

re-reading it, are you talking about the "wireless network available" message?

Hi and thanks! I think it is coming from the fact that Istrted to set up an available network of unknown type but never finished it. Maybe I did finsh it and that is why ti keeps telling me I an use it va ths pop up. It's coming frmo the pc that is gettign it definately. will try the messengr service definately. Thanks again for the suggessions. Cher (BIRDWISE)

Hi Hondy,
I didn't catch your line about it being the wireles network until just now. Yes, it is a wireless nework area thing> I had gone into the network area to see what was waht> Saw the Remote Access Network available and decided to click on it...I couldn;t get outo f it onceI did so and couldn't delete it either...now this is the pop up I keep getting...remote access networok available.....and thata is it. It does it to ofast but if yuo manage to click onint nothing happens anyaway> I need a way to delete the whole thing without deleteing my wireless networks. G
Thanks for your help, Cher (BIRDWISE)

sometimes right clicking on the network connection and selecting disable, then enable it again fixes some wierd problems. Maybe try that?

Hi Cher,

A Remote Access Network is the ability to get access to a computer or a network from a remote distance. In corporations, people at branch offices, telecommuters, and people who are travelling may need access to the corporation's network. Home users get access to the Internet through remote access to an Internet service provider (ISP). Dial-up connection through desktop, notebook, or handheld computer modem over regular telephone lines is a common method of remote access. Unless you need to access your PC away from home, it's really not needed. If you do, you should definitely set up security measures so not everybody can gain access.
If you want to eliminate this (& hopefully stop the popups), try booting in Safe Mode (set a Restore Point first in case anything goes wrong). Go to Control Panel & see if the Remote Access Network is listed there. If it is, right click on it. If it allows you to, select Delete in the drop down menu. If not, select disable. Again, right click on Remote Access & select properties this time. Click on the Advanced tab @ the top then click on the Settings button. Click On the Exceptions & scroll down the listing there to see if it's listed there. If it is, take the check mark out or simply highlight it & delete.
Finally, after closing all open windows, click on Run, type msconfig in the dialog box & click OK. Click on the Startup tab in the Sys Config Utility & scroll down to see if it's listed there. If it is & there's a checkmark in the box, click on the box to delete it, click Apply & then OK. Reboot your system. You'll get a warning message telling you changes have beed made to your Sys Config. Just put a check in the box not to notify you again. After reboot is complete, see if your problem is solved.

Hello Bob & Hondy,
I'm trying to write without having this bird on my shoulder bite me (a bad thing to allow..on the shoulder that is)
I did go there and try that but didn;t see anything that said remote access control exactly like the pop up did. I clicked on it anyway and removed it then put it back since i was unsure if it was teh same thing or a needed network> Now I understand tht I don't need it. Before I had a chance to tell if it worked I started having other problems with hte desktop and I haaave to straighten this out ASAP since the same problem occured on two new desktops last year...no one could figure it out and I ended up giving them away..no wonder I;m broke..this is the 3rd damn desktop. While the laptops which work without wries, aer fine this desktop fails to establish connection to server. I will post on it seperaetly.
I checked for the pop up and you were right Bob..do not see it anyplace! VBG
I'm going to make roased parrot now..kidding. I am agoignto post on that other matter because I feel it must be a simsple issue tht no one can figure out...yet. G
Thank you both for helping so much with this annoyance! Great advice and a great forum. Cher (BIRDWISE)

PS Bob, unchecking the remote access network adapter shouldn't make these connection failures should it? One way to find out I suppose but wanted to get your opinion. Cher

Hi Cher,
To answer your?, no it should have no effect. If Remote Access is not needed by you simply disable it. If later down the road, it creates problems or whatever, you can simply re-enanble it. Another bit of advice, I'm not sure if I'm misreading your problem but I have run into clients that we're having network connection problems as they were running both wired & wireless PC's off the same router. It doesn't happen all the time and I have not run into the problem enough to determine if it's a problem with a particular router system or just another computer quirk. You may want to try deleting all network connections & reinstalling those you need. Add your PC's 1 at a time to see if all works well. If your not running Windows XP on all your PC's, create a Network Setup Wizard from your Windows XP (it will fit on a floppy disk) & install it it on your non XP systems before trying to add them to your LAN.

Hope this helps!

Hi Bob,
Thanks so much for keeping tabs on the post/problem> I had done this with the first two pcs except for the last part of your suggfestion making a floppy or CD etc and installing first> Great ideas> This is very doable! G
I plan on enabling file sharing and don't know why it wasn't done before except the EX pc guru didn't want to do it. But before I do that I will start with your suggestions. This is the not the first pc (desktop) that had this problem...I gave away two brand new beautiful desktopss simplsy becasue I couldn't use them...and now the third one is experiencing the same problems. We had cahnged the router and modem and IP addies until we were blue in the face...I worked with every possible entity on them eg myself, pc knowedgable folks, HP when it was an HP, the service providers, teh router folks, the modem provider...you name it.
At first it was a desktop and one laptop, then a second desktop and the laptop and now a third desktop and two different laptops simply becasue not being able to use teh desktop I shoved al lmy data into the little SOny and literally ruined it..plus the cable inpt receptacle got loose...you get teh idea however and sorry for the redundanacy. I've had it up to there with this literally and have considered just not usingn pcs anymore but how wold I work and function......? Theh age of technology....
It's gret when it does what it's maintained it is supposed to bbut in my case it is clerly abasurd and has bandrupted me with costs of new pcs lappies, and tech support, even new software. Can you believe this?
Thanks so much for this help> I hope to get past this problem so I can function in the real world! LOL
Not really funny, TTYS Cher

Glad I was able to help and thanks for the star. It's always nice to hear back yes it worked, or it sent me in the right direction or even how you solved your problem yourself. It helps other users down the road when they can see how a similar issue they are experiencing was resolved.
Thanks again for the star! Wishing you safe surfing.

Bob B-)

Oh gosh,
No, I meant the first prob;em of the pop up had been resolved...now three weeks later it has started occassional...very stragne, and yes there were updates.
But i've not nyet tried the other steps for the second problem of the xp system and third xp pc that is giving me server conection problems....I gave away two pcs because of it and can't afford to give this one awy too. This has got to be solved.
PC guru had purchased it for me because I was quite ill, a bad move. Said he got me the in home protection etc. Now I call Micro Ctr they gave me inhome serv # and I'm told on the contract it says it's for a gold laptop (who has ev er heard of a gold lapatop G)...and unless Micro Ctr changes the contract (model # is correct) they can't come out> I had micro Cr call them and she denied ever saying that to me...told her iahve no contract. What on erth can you do in cases like this? I spent over 5,000.00 trying to repair the other pcs and lap which died because I loaded it up so much because the desktops weren't working properly..remember that problem? Poor Bob. That I haven't worked on yet but you sent me steps and I will do so as soon as I can. had embroidery machine issues an dhad to go to NH 1.5 hrs one way and 6 hr there several times so you know how that goes.
Am very anxius to work on the desktop however> Any thoughts you guys? C

Hi Cher,
Sorry I took so long in replying but I've been slowly recovering from major back surgery. First, I might suggest giving your PC Guru an early retirement. You didn't mention what OS you're running but I'm assuming it's Windows XP home or pro edition. If not, let me know what your running. Click start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools-> System Restore.Click on System Restore Settings on the left. Click on the Automatic Updates tab and select Day & Time to install them. I have mine set for download updates but let me decide when to install them (strictly a personal setting as I'm never sure when I'll be working on my PC. Next, click on the Remote tab. If thre's a check in 'Allow users to connect remotely to this computer', take it out unless you're running a LAN. You might also want to click on the Hardware tab & click on Device Manager to check for any conflicts there. While still in Hadware, put a dot in the 1st radio dial to have windows chek for updated drivers for any nee device you install. Finally click Apply & OK.
Next, click on Windows Update, download & install all crtical & important updates.
Finally, I'm not sure what, if any AV or AS you're running. Thre are some very good AntiVirus apps out thre & quite a few are free. You can try Avast available at:

or Grisoft at:

Grisoft also offers free AntiSpyware & AntiRootkit.
Holy Batman! M$ & Bill Gates also has a good & free AntiSpyware called Windows Defender with automatic updates included in your Windows Update. Another free app that works better than Windows Disc cleaup is CCleaner. You can download it @:

After downloading & installing all the apps, be sure to check for updates before running them. Also, shut down System Restore before running these apps. If your scans finds & deletes any bugs, you don't want to reintroduce them to your PC if you ever need to run that utility. Once all is clean & your system is running good, then you can set up a new Restore Point.

Hope all this work. Let me know one way or the other.

Hi Bob,
I also appologize for my lateness. I am in chronic pain and it really takes a huge bite out of my life. I need several surgeries too. LOL
I know I copied your instructions but need to do so again and will try them in a few days wehn the pain subsides a little. I am so sorry. I wholeheartedly appreciate all of your effort and time and knowlege. Please accept my appology. I will write this week end as will be at hospital this week. :(
I'm going to copy these again now and read it over again as well. Thanks and talk to you soon, Cher

Hi Bob,
I have done all of those things. Yes it's the xp pro that is giving me the trouble with the server/cxn.
I run Nod32 on all systems. COuld be the problem?? Checkd for copatability though = ok.
I automaticalaly get notified of all updates MS, and other, plus I have been maintaining the pcs very well for driver updates etc.
There are no problems in any areas.
Yes, I believe it is a LAN cxn....so that is out. G
This problem occured in the past with two other xp systems (desktops) I had to end up trashing both pcs and now it seems like a server probnlem and the pcs may have been ok if somone knew that.
We had checkded the router, the mdoem, everything...everything. No one could figure it out and now here we aer again. The os was the only thing similar, they were differenet brands of pcs, different carriers, like one was Vonage, one as now, Comcast, etc. Makes no sense.
What else canI tell you? Cher

Hi Cher,

No need to apologize, both our PC's here crashed & I finally restored mine & nearly done with my wife's. At one time, I had 3 PC's & 2 laptops scattered across 3 rooms for repair which didn't go over well with the lady of the house. Sorry to hear about your medical problems. NOD32 is a great AV program but it has a highly technical interface. It cleans up most malware files but sometime misses resulting changes to the network settings file and most of the less-important Registry changes. As mentioned earlier, try downloading & running Grisoft's Anti-Spyware (they no longer offer the free Anti-Rootkit). I noticed in my earlier reply, I didn't give you the web address for Windows Defender so here it is:

Remember to check for updates before running these apps & do a full system scan. You might also try downloading Revo Uninstaller & see if it can find any traces of Remote Access Network.

Another option is to download & run 'Shoot The Messenger' from GRC at:

After downloading & running that app, if the Messenger Service is enabled, click on Disable Messenger.

See if any of these options resolve your problem before trying more radical measures.

Remember, if you can't stand behind our troops, feel free to stand in front of them!

Gee, that sounds good (all of the options that is). I will try the GRC I think. Never told you that I disabled windows defender on my laptops becasue it was causing me a big pain in the butt. Had enough pains already! G
I didn;t know Windows defender is on xp pro systems?? Is it?? Will definately check that out.
I like Gris Soft ware; used to use that before. But the reason disabled Defender on laptops was partly becaue i already had Nod32. Don't have any of thee problems on the laptops btw only onthe xp systems (two of which I tossed out and they were oth brandnew and cost over 2,000 each!! ) Thisis the third one giving such error messages every time it goes on etc. A pain n the butt only since all of my softwre goes with xp (photo editig etc. and is worth a smal lfortune itself, i figure it's best t keep a desktop taht is xp onl I wish it wold work...it is new.
Your wife sounds like my Momonly this is my house...I have pc peripherals , printers galore, oh, cameras galore, you name it even in the bed room...entire office, liv room, etc etc> Tell yur wife there are folks like this evrywhere but then she may tell yuo to go live with them! ROFL. Hope not.
Mcro Ctr still farms out to same company and they persist in trying t avoid coingn t hoseu but Imarched in there the other day...have heard nothing from them. Since it could be a server issue they need to come here> I might as them to pay for a tech to lolok at it (not theirs) andnot the pc guru I fired, lol.
Thanks. Will get back to you guys on this.
PS goign for two foot surgeries and one lappy surgery in lieu of spinal so that is good. All for pain issues.

Hi Cher,

Here's a few more things to try:

Dowload & run Belarc Advisor at:

Print it out for your own records. It will give you a complete profile of your computer including your product key codes in case you've lost them. Copy & paste the results to this thread.

As a last resort, you can try searching for it in Registry Editor. Go to Start -> Run & type regedit in the dialog box & click OK. Once the Registry Editor comes up, click on file & select Export in the drop down menu. Select Save in Desktop & in the File name box call it Registry Backup & add the date. Click Save. Verify that it was saved in Desktop. If anything goes wrong, you can restore your Registry. You might also want to set a Restore Point before doing any of this as an additional back up. Now that you've got everything backed up click on the Edit tab in the Registry Editor & select Find in the drop down menu. Type in Remote Access Network in the Find what: box. Be sure you have checks in the Keys, Values & Data boxes & put a check in Match whole string only. Click find next. If it finds one, make note of its location & click F3 to continue the search. Don't do anything, just post what it finds (if it finds anything) to this thread.
Good luck with your surgeries!

Remember, if you can't stand behind our troops, feel free to stand in front of them!
