Greetings Gurus,

I keep getting pop-up msg's from God knows who. They are all an advertisement of some sort or another. Obviously I have inadvertantly enabled something that is allowing this activity. I'm on a cable modem which explains why I get them at all times of the day. What do I need to do to make them stop. Your assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Hello,

These messageboxes are sent through the windows messenger service.
There are two approaches to fixing this problem, if the computer is standalone:

1. Enable the XP built in firewall on the cable modem connection (or install third party firewall software).

2. Go into the control panel -> administrative tools -> services and disable the Messenger service.

Note: Item no. 2 is not recommended for any computer participating in a network as it will stop any legitimate network broadcast messages from getting through as well.

If you run the internet connection through a router or hardware firewall, set it to block incoming connections for ports 135 through 139 inclusive, which will have the same effect.
