I was recently inundated with pop-up ads to the extent that I could not use the internet. Tried to find what program was causing it, but to no avail. Finally had to reformat the hard drive which worked great but was a pain in the neck to do and get everything re-loaded, etc. Problem is, I never determined how the problem started so I can't really take precautons to prevent it from happening again. Any suggestions???

Hello.

If your machine is standalone, then enable the XP in built firewall on your internet connection, or better still, install a third party product which offers greater protection.
If your system is within a corporate firewalled environment, contact the firewall admins to ensure that the firewall blocks incoming requests to the MS file and printer sharing ports (it should do).

It is difficult to prevent the infection. But see FAQ faq608-4650 as reinstall your operating system is almost never necessary to rid yourself of these pests.
