pop up boxes

hi all
i want to put a value in a cell. its critical to what i'm working on to make sure that the number has a correct sign ie plus or minus. i was thinking that if i could get a pop up msg box or even a prompt box to come up when i click on a cell it would help and i could do some stuff that way to ensure i get the right thing into the cell and i need to ensure this without using vba. is this possible. other suggestions would be appreciated too.

Have you ever tried using Data Validation? Menu item Data/Validation and choose whatever setting would be appropriate.
