Hi,

I used to use a dial-up connection to access the Internet and use outlook express to download my emails from a POP3 server. No problems there, it all worked fine regrdless of the Dial-Up service I was using. However I've just hooked up to a network and so the Internet outside of the Network runs through a proxy server. I've set up my LAN connection in Intenet Options so it uses a configuration script and the Internet runs fine. I can also access and IMAP mail server (running on the Network) using outlook express.

However I can no longer access my POP email. It just won't connect to any of the three pop server I use. Any ideas about how to sort this out?

Thanks a lot! :)

Is there a Firewall in between you and the Internet? They could have you blocked using the Firewall. Dan

Well, I'd have to assume there is, it's quite likely, but I don't think they'd block us from accessing POP accounts. I've asked the administrators about Outlook Express and they always moan.. "Ohh, we don't us Outlook, we don't know how to sort it out.". They don't seem to know that much about anything really! Ah well, looks like I'll have to live with webmail then!

Cheers for your help :)

no matter if you have a firewall or not, POP mail cant be sent/received unless you have it set up in Exchange, which I presume you are using???? If so go to Exchange Administrator and then expand Configurations, and in that tree go to Protocols, and make sure POP3 (mail) Settings (on the right hand window) is Enabled by double clicking on it and ticking the enable button. Then just under Protocols (back on the left), expand the Servers, go to your Server name, expand it and then go to Protocols, and again double click on POP3 (mail) settings, untick the first box labled 'Use Site Defaults for all properties', and then tick the box to enable POP3.
and that should do the trick....... Jay~

They might have blocked port 110 on the firewall (POP3)!! Also, the Proxy Server would need to be configured to allow this!! Proxies and firewalls are usually configured by the system administrators to allow only the services that they consider to be necessary through!! On a corporate LAN where internet access is via a Proxy and all company mail runs through an Exchange server (or similar)other services are usually tied down pretty tight! Allowing all other services through can be a nightmare for administrators and so they would much rather give you what you need and nothing more!

KeyTech .. it doesn't matter how you configure Exchange if the firewall won't let it through then it ain't going through!! We usually set firewalls up to only allow ports 25 and 53 to and from mail servers. POP3 would not work in those cases!!

Chris.

Chris...I understand your point, but I was saying that weather or not the firewall was configured to receive pop3 through the ports required, it still has to be set up in Exchange to allow the clients to send and receive in their accounts.....

Anyway, Excape.....have you got a firewall!?!?! some feedback would help us help you!!! If so, then as Chris said, you have to get your admin team to sort it out..... Jay~

Okay .. okay .. fair point!! Exchange/Proxy/Firewall .. whatever has to be configured to allow POP3 through it!!

xscape .. talk to your system admin and explain your situation. They may or may not entertain you!! Good luck!!

KeyTech .. love the Tae Kwon Do web site .. keep up the good work!!

Sorry for taking so long to reply. Thanks for your suggestions, go on have a star each!

I would have to assume that they don't allow POP3 access either by firewall or by through the Proxy. they have a hard enough time as it is keeping a network running that serves about 9000 people. It was only started up about two weeks ago and they're rushing around like a blue ars*d fly trying to keep the thing running. I do have an IMAP mailbox that I can access through the the network, so I just have to forward email there if I need to. I'm gonna stick with the webmail for the moment though.

Maybe when they've got everything running smoothly I'll get on to them. I'm gonna give Netscape messenger a go because that's what they recommend and support. Probably won't help but it'll keep me ammused for half an hour trying to sort it! :)

Thanks again for your suggestions!

WOW !!! .. I got a star!!! That rocks!!!

Thanks very much!!
