Does anyone know if MS Exchange 5.5 can function as a POP3 e-mail server. I have a few remote users that have exchange mailboxes. It is very difficult to have then authenticate on to my domain using a 56k dialup. This process is unbelievably slow!!!

The web access is not an ideal solution either. My thought was that if exchange could run a POP3 service it would eliminate the need to authenticate on to my network. E-mail could then be picked up from the internet.

I do not have allot of experience with exchange. Any ideas

-Danny
Danny Daniels
dannyd@aboveboardelectronics.com

Yes, Exchange 5.5 supports POP3. Open the properties for the user/s you want to enable POP3 support for. Flip to the Protocols tab and there you can see what protocols are enabled.

Regards

Lars
I think the Internet E-Mail Service under Tools...Services runs on POP3. Perhaps this will solve you latency issue.

Duthcy,

Are you refering to Outlook or Exchange ?

<<I think the Internet E-Mail Service under Tools...Services runs on POP3. Perhaps this will solve you latency issue. >>
-Danny

The proplem here is that POP3 leaves you in a position where you can't back up the mailboxes. IMAP might be a better situation.

Better yet, why not Outlook Web Access?
Mike Hillwig
mike@hypermike.com
<a href= done more R5 deployments than I care to think about.
I made sure the POP3 protocol was enabled, it was.
I am able to connect to my mail server, but I am getting hung up at the login prompt. It is prompting me for a login and password. I am assuming to things.
1. The login and password are going to be my NT account used to login into the Domain.
2. The login needs to authenticate

When I use my NT login and password, it returns the login screen and asks me to retry. My login does not seem to work. I am thinking maybe I missed something or maybe I need to enable something. I am not sure where to go from here?

I get the same result whether I use Outlook or express.

Any ideas?

-Danny

If you log into the remote computer using the local account, you will get the message you mention. You should log in using the domain account and wait for the message

graemec,

Can you explain this further, I am not following you ?

-Danny

Try using the following syntax when you login via POP3:

Login: "yourdomain/loginname"
Password: "just your password"

I have also seen the following syntax used:

Login: "domain/domain_account/email_account"

One thing that I ran into also, was that if you have changed the alias for the user account other than the domain login it will not work either. Make the alias the same as the nt domain login.
