I recently purchased the following:

2.4Ghz Pebtium 4 533 mhz bus
ATI Radeon 9700 PRO 128MB Video Card
256 PC1066 RDRAM
120 Gig Hard Drive
Sony Trinitron Multi Scan E540 Monitor (21") (It had the same problem when using a different monitor which eventually started on fire tho that is a different forum!)

Its running Windows XP.

It is performing very poorly - even at low resolutions, the graphics are choppy. This is true both for DirectX and OpenGL programs.

Any ideas as to why? It arrived last week so I can send it back.

Thanks!
Mrs B

It could be a number of things. Might be best to take advantage of Dell's tech support and call them to troubleshoot. It would take much longer in an online forum such as Tek-Tips. What you need is a "real-time" discussion!

Since you got the Cat's A!@ system, I'd box it up and ship it back--buy another one. This is *another* thing you paid for with Dell. And the only possible reason it could be so FUBARed this early in the game--assuming you didn't manage to somehow hose your system right away, is you got some bunk hardware someplace.

So what part of your system is not up to snuff? NEVERMIND I wouldn't waste one second on it. They have a satisfaction policy and will willingly accept the system back--and shouldn't give you too much grief. Yea, you'll eat some shipping costs--but do you want to band aid a problem now just to have the video card or board take a dump on you in about 2 or 3 years when your support is long gone? I wouldn't risk it. Exchange it for a new system while you're still in the 30 day grace period (if you are).

You pretty much got the best video card and a potently powerful processor/board and Dell's systems are rigorously tested...so something is definitely up. Dallas S. Kelsey, III
