I work at an ISP, in the DSL department. Part of my job is troubleshooting customers' home networks. (Oh yey.)
We've been running into "mystery" networking problems with Dell computers running Windows XP. (May affect other brands too, but I know most if not all of these problems are on Dells.)
Problems include:
* System doesn't recognize NIC card, but link lights are lit and worked previously
* NIC card seems active but isn't; link lights are lit, the system reports it's working properly
* DHCP times out (with no error), reports as active on our DSLAM, and can't be renewed by client
Sometimes disabling and reenabling the LAN solves the problem, sometimes rebooting solves the problem, sometimes nothing solves the problem.
I've also heard of mystery XP networking problems at (in the XP networking section).
For fun and interest: I'm asking for a show of hands from people who have run into weird LAN issues with XP. I'd like to find out if it seems to be Dell-specific, and I'd love to hear what kinds of things were done to correct general LAN problems.
Cheers,
Mush
