How do you lock down the desktop in Windows 2000? I don't want the user to be able to change backgrounds or anything, except click on the icons I have provided on his desktop for him to do his job.

I know it's probably in the W2K Pro book, but for the life of me I can't find it!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you have set up yourself as the administrator, and all users as different levels of user, you can select the options they have to alter specific resourses, i have my server set as admin, and my own puter set as admin privledges, and my oldest child as a power user, (can install programs but cant alter system settings), and the rest of my childrens puters are user only, they have no privledges other than useage. Hope this helps

At work, we have our company logo as our background and we lock it using the MMC. Login as local admin and click Start\Run type "mmc", console1 will open and click on console/add/remove snap in../add/group policy/(group policy object)local computer/finish. close snap-in windows then go to console root. open local computer policy/user configuration/desktop/active directory/active desktop wallpaper(click 2x)/enable/specify the location of the background. open prohibit changes policy and enable. If background is jpeg or html, you need to enable active desktop. save the mmc and desktop should be locked. hope this helps.

Ah, we are not on active directory yet. I remember mmc from class, though vaguely! I will print this out and it should help when we completely migrate in the next few months.

Thank you so much for your help.

As long as you're using w2k, standalone or noe, it will work. Later.
:)
