does it make a difference if the wires are reversed on the opposite ends of the line cords - just took out a Partner ACS and put in a single pair ESI system - i reused the old straight through (I believe) line cords - the ones that come with the phones have the red and green wires in different positions on each end - i have also run across 2 pair line cords with a pair reversed - any thoughts / help would be appreciated

On a Partner, the polarity of the individual pairs does not matter, just don't swap the actual pairs.

No telling on the ESI single-pair system. Test it at the backboard with jacks wired up both ways to see if it is an issue.
