"Try F9*1 and see if your system recognizes the startalk unit. If it doesn't it could be because you are using an MICS or CICS with startalk. Startalk voicemails do not work with CICS or MICS units (with exception of MICS 1.x)"

That is a true statement.

There are two different boxes with the StarTalk VM being an old version that, (1st release of vm for Norstar), that uses and external floppy disk loader and Flash being the newer model that uses a PCMCIA ROM card. I've noticed this confusion often on forums.

Well I am pretty sure I have a Startalk VM not flash. However I do not think I am using a MICS or CICS. It is a 6X16 KSU am I correct with this thought? Any way I can tell by looking at the startalk box what i have and what version it is?

Is there a visible software PCMCIA card? It's about the size of a credit card. Or is there a disk drive for 3.5 disk? Or, none of the above?

Given the SP you provided in the other thread, you have a 6x16, not a CICS.

None of the above...I'd say you have the old StarTalk voicemail, pre NVM-1995 and that's old for this equipment.

so does that mean i am out of luck? On one of the chips it has a sticker with "Version 1.3.2S". I tried to connecting to the RS232 port on the side with 300/7/E/1 and i got nothing. Is it a dead box?

Those are the correct parameters. If fan runs when pwr is on, check & verify cable - pin2-pin2, pin3-pin3 and pin7-pin7. if ok, remove cover, ensure ribbon cable from RS-232 PCA assembly is plugged into J14 on the mother board. the pin 1 indicator (colored stripe) on the cable end in J14, should be on the side next to the power supply connector. The pin 1 indicator on the cable end in the RS232 should be at the bottom. If all okay-replace the StarTalk and file under JUNK.

First off thanks for all your help.

Fan Runs, Hard Drive Runs and clicks as if it is booting, J14 cable all good the only thing i have left to look at is the main cable to the PC i will check that tomorrow when i go into the office. I would say it is on its way to the junk pile. [sad]

DueE the serial cable from the startalk to the computer running hyperterm should be pin 2 to pin 3 and pin 3 to pin 2 should it not ? (transmit to receive, receive to transmit ) 300, e , 7 , 1 , x on x off , vt100. Push the black button on the side when powering on to set this in the startalk.

west coaster, I do not have any old StarTalks left in service to verify the cable. As a result of your post, I checked the info in my post and it reads correct per the StarTalk - 2.0.1 Troubleshooting and Repair Manual,P0731242 iss 03, Sec 4: Diagnosing user problems, page 4-6. If it is incorrect, accept my apology for Nortel's documentation.

DueE,
on this version of software can he look at the maintenance and see if the KSU recognises that there is a voicemail module attached? JerryReeve

DueE my post was supposed to be worded as a question not as a statement of fact and was not meant to be offensive. I probably am wrong which would be very bad because that means I have lead someone else down the garden path in another thread.[blush]

west coaster, no offensive was taken, I don't want to lead anyone down that path either, that's why I double checked and provided the source. Sure didn't mean to come across that. I was red-faced thinking I may have transposed the numbers! Keep up the good posts! [peace]
