Point Layers in AutoCad 2000

How do I tell AutoCad 2000 to put points on seperate layers according to the descriptions. In 14 it was the command Change Layers by Description under the Utility1 pull down menu. I still can access that menu in 2000, but when I select the points that I imported in 2000 it does not change their layers. All the points are on the 0 layer. HELP!
