I need to supply some power over ethernet access points and IP phones where my ethernet switch does not have POE capability. I'd rather not have wall wart bricks at every device. Can someone recommend a rack-side power injector? I'm looking at some stuff on the web, but I'd like some real world experienced comments. Thanks.

If you must go down that ugly road instead of bying a POE switch check out PowerDsine.

Search for "Midspan power supply" - these are rack-mounted devices with multiple "in" and "Out" ports. Puts power on appropriate pairs

Honestly, you would do your self a great favor and save yourself a lot of headaches if you just go ahead and buy the PoE Switches...

This looks nice: tyconpower.com/products/TP-MS.htm

If your switches are either unmanaged or big/old/noisy just get new switches with POE.

While I also recommend walking down the PoE switch road, I'd advise you to stay away from Netgear's offerings. They're bloody terrible.

Unfortunately the switches have already been purchased. This is an idea we're floating after the fact. If I were starting from scratch, I would definitely go PoE switches.

Thanks for the input.

HP offers some good selections also.

Good Luck,

Has been in the cabling business for about twenty years and is now the Sr PM for a cabling company located in the Los Angeles area.

Most of my customers use ACD rack mount panels for that. They're modular, and match up asthetically with standard patch panels. 3" patch cord in, 3" patch cord out.
