I have many engineers out on the road with PDA's with pocket pc 2003 and using activesync. All is working great apart from when they delete items from their inbox. They will sync and the item disappears from the deleted items folder on the PDA, however when you look through a normal outlook client the deleted items folder contains the email. Why does this happen? I cant see any settings on the PDA. I am having to clear out manually users deleted item folder, which is a bit frustrating.
Any suggestions please????

The whole point of a 'deleted items' folder is so that you can get back things you've deleted by mistake. It's supposed to contain copies of your deleted messages.

I suspect that these aren't retained on the PDA after sync-up due to space limitation reasons - there's no point in keeping items on the PDA that the user has said they don't want, as if they need to retrieve them they can do so on their desktop.

If you really don't want to retain deleted items on the desktop machine you can set an option in Outlook to empty the 'deleted items' folder on exit. It's under Tools/Options/Other.

These users never use a deaktop machine. I appreciate why the PDA doesn't keep the emails, but the mailbox on the server just keeps getting bigger and bigger and the user via his PDA can do nothing about it.

Ah, I see what you mean. I have no experience of configuring a mail server but is there no AutoArchive or AutoDelete setting for old mail? If there is anything that will solve your problem it is more likely to be on the server side than on the client (PDA) side.
