PMON Defunc on Unix

Hi Friends,
do anybody know the answer of this problem??
PMON has gone defunc on unix server running in 24X 7 computing environment as far as i know if any of the background process dies we got to restart oracle but as this process has gone defunc can we recover it without shutting down the database?

If the process truly is defunct, I'm surprised your database is still working.

IME when one of the processes fails the others follow pretty quickly - I've not seen the situation you describe and I'm fairly sure you will need a restart to correct it
