I'm planning to take a couple of the PMI CAQs (Certificates of Additional Qualification). The one for PMO (Project Mgmt Office) and the one for IS (the Systems one, not the networking one). The betas are available now and if you don't pass the beta you can retake for free later. I think this is a good risk reduction strategy!

Has anyone read & have feedback on the books suggested for studying?

I am planning on sitting for the PMO CAQ exam in January of 2003. Have you taken the exam yet? Any advice you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

Elizabeth,

I taught a course last Spring based on Kathy Schwalbe's book. It is heavily weighted towards software engineering in the examples, but the PM concepts are aligned with the PMBOK pretty well. Since this class was geared towards the key employees of a systems integration company, I worked up examples from the networking side of IT, but overall, I found it to be an excellent approach to PM in IT. This book is worth the $50 IMHO, it is based on the PMBOK 2000 and is bundled with a 120 day eval copy of MS Project 2000, so the software examples are a little dated now, but still valid for introducing one to Project.

Another good text is : Software Project Management
By James Clements & (I'm not sure who the 2nd person is)

The second person is I believe the founder of PMI which created one of your readings (PMBOK)

Very easy to understand yet has what you need to know to run a successful project.

Good Luck
