Suddenly my PM is not saving and coming up with a HyperContent Manager Error. On pressing this I get another error msg reading Cannot save.Table is still checked out. I can find no reference to this and everthing worked perfectly 24hours ago on the same file.
Using 98se
And thanks for the tips on the image format in a previous thread.

Hi, briteyes,

Which version of PM are you using?

Is this the error message: "Can not save document. Internal error. Table is still checked out."

I can only point you to Troubleshoot damaged publications (PageMaker 6.0-7.x)

I have searched the PM KB and used Google but can find no definitive solution.

An error referring to "Table" usually means the file is corrupt in some way, often terminally. You need to re-save the file for salvage puproses if you can. A possible cause is copy'n'pasting images instead of using File-> Place.

Thank you so much I do keep a file saved under a different name each time I use this program. PM7 Also I place all my images which are jpg and I will now change them to Tiff. I dont have links as such as this is a small book on family history for personal consumption.
If there is another program you know of that is easier to produce small books in I would like to know but I thought PM7 looked quite okay.
Your link to solutions is excellent.

Hi, briteyes,

PM7 is OK for producing small books.

The trouble is, it's old. Very old. It still contains code from the 1980s. So if 18 months is seen as a generation in the world of computers, PageMaker is at least 10 generations old. The industrial parallel is the horse and the blacksmith.

However, if you follow a few basic rules and keep within a set of limits, it's fine.

Most, if not all of these constraints are listed in AdobeForums PM FAQs:

Very simply:[ol][li]PM was originally designed to work in the PostScript Environment.[/li]
[li]ALWAYS use File -> Place to import an image or text.[/li]
[li]Always open, save and import files from a local fixed disk - never open, save or import files from a network drive, floppy disk, zip drive or CD.[/li]
[li]Never use "Paste Special"/"Insert object".[/li]
[li]Use only these image formats: *.TIF or *.EPS. PM7 will also accept *.PSD and *.AI. *.PDF can be placed too.[/li]
[/ol]
