Could you give us some more info? Using DHCP? AD? How many dc's? Basic network setup to start with. Thanks.

Our DC runs DHCP. AD and DNS runs on both the DC and the replica. For starters, I've noticed that both the DC and the replica server both think they are the SOA for the AD domains. This can't be right.....

What do you mean by replica? Do you have more than one DC? This is from
DNS Records

The DNS database consists of a number of different resource records, the most common of which are of course the address records which hold computer names and the TCP/IP address of that computer.

There are other records that are held on the DNS server and while we mentioned some of them briefly in Microsoft DNS - Part 1 I am going to detail them a little more here.

The Start of Authority Record (SOA) indicates the starting point of authority for a given DNS zone on a specific DNS server. The SOA resource record is the first resource record created when you add a new zone.
Good luck.

M8,

apols if this is wide of the makr but ensure you have the 'Register this connection' in DNS, ensure your dns server is pointed to itself as a primary and secondary, registering the connection ensures the services hosted by your server and advertised and resource/srv records. If your totally screwed and need a fresh start, try grabbing a zone file from somewhere else (ensure the MSDCS folder is present), docter the contents of the file paying particular attention to your sites, ldap, dc and kdc inputs. When this is correct convert your zone to a standard primary, replace the zone text file and start the service!

Bear in mind that without dns Ad replication will not take place ensuring that the faulty dns/dc will not be able to c other resources and so on, if you have another DC and/or dns server functioning correctly then enable zone transfer on the correct dns and config your incorrect dns and a standard secondary and transfer te correct dns entries across.

hope this helps

The PDC on my network runs DNS but in AD-integrated mode. What DNS mode should the BDC be in?
