I am running XP on a IBM PC 300pl 6862 with an onboard AGP S3 Trio3D and I'm trying to add an old ATI Rage 3D (Rage I) PCI card with another monitor. I can't get XP to "start" both video adaptors. I keep getting that "code 10" message. I can have at most one card working by switching the video mode between AGP and PCI in the CMOS. Here's what I've tried so far (nothing's worked so far):

1) Upgrade the BIOS
2) Can't find newer drivers than those that are part of XP
3) Turn 0N/OFF "parity" in the CMOS
4) Uninstall and reinstall the adaptors
5) Change PCI slots with the ATI card

Is there a place where I can find home made drivers for doing this sort of thing (if it's a driver issue)? I've noticed that there are a couple jumpers on the ATI card. Will changing those things do something? Is it possible that this is impossible with these adaptors, or will I eventually get it?

Please help!?

You may spend lots of time trying to tune this setup and never get results. Both boards are not supported anymore by the manufacturers, and the standards by which XP deals with two monitors did not exist then, so the driver hooks for dual-screen support are either not there, or have not been tested. I suggest that you try to get a single-board with dual monitor outputs.

I was afraid someone would say that. I have this nagging suspicion that the problem can be fixed in the CMOS, though, since XP recognizes both adaptors but will only "start" the one that's set in the CMOS setting (i.e., AGP or PCI).

Thanks for the quick reply to my first message.

See it as a "time is money" proposal. Withe the old boards you will spend lotsa time trying to see if you can invent an outdated wheel. Instead, put some $100. on a Matrox dual-head board or equivalent, and put your time on something either less frustrating (cause you will be frustrated with your experiments with these two old boards) or more productive.
