Now I have the Modem installed but the Speaker is is still heard throughout the whole connection, even while suring. What do I do about this? I've tried advanced init string, and I have WinXP...

Have you tried M0L0?
Have you set the DUN properties to leave the volume off, also in modem properties, as well as browser connect preferences? Cheers,
