We are trying to make the change from old analog telephone guys into the IP world. The application is radio mountaintops linked back to the central station by telco T1s and linked together with ethernet or T1 microwave links. The payload will be a few 64k IP voice links and that's it.
The most obvious network topology will be a ring with about 6 hops from the central station and back again. We want a protocol that will prevent problems from the loop but reroute traffic back to the central station if one of the links is broken. It also needs to notify us, preferably via contact closure, if any link goes down so we can repair it. Shortest Path Bridging or Spanning Tree Protocol are some technologies I have encountered but I do not have the experience to know if they are right.
It would be a valuable bonus to have all except the central station equipment run on 12, 24 volt or 48 volt power because we already have substantial batteries and don't need another layer of conversion in a UPS.
