After my nifty XP64 system blew up* three days ago I put in a new MB and decided to install XP (drivers) rather than the full version Vista Pro I have sitting in a drawer.Install went well and nearly all files and apps are on it, but the above Zip error message appears more or less randomly and can't be recreated by any particular action.

It seems mostly related to desktop (IE, user/desktop..etc) issues: Creating a folder, copying to the desktop, whatever, but also comes doing system search.

I did not to the best of my knowledge install any multi volume software. I have unzipped a few apps (Clipmate, for instance) which I had saved as zip files for a case like this. These were downloaded as zip.

I have not zipped anything and unzipped only a few apps that I had to download to replace others.

I was careful to avoid the "install on first use" option on all programs .

What I need to figure out is the identity of the "multi volume set". Would something in computer management point to the supposedly incomplete program??

*Blew up:Sparks, lots of smoke, stench. pffft shssssshhhhh. pop pop pop. Really. About a year old. Dang.

Do you have WinZip (or other Zip utility) configured to insert itself into the context menu?

Maybe. I unzipped winzip yesterday. I did no configuring, however..
How would that work?

(Using "WinZip" to stand for any similar utility.)

On your desktop, right-click on a document or folder. If the resulting context menu contains "WinZip," that's what I'm talking about.

If that's the case, I'm guessing that the installation of "WinZip" was corrupt and/or associated entries in the registry are fouled. I'd uninstall "WinZip," reboot, and see if the problem goes away. If not, I'd look for orphaned "WinZip" registry entries and eliminate them. Reboot, progress?

Super smart idea. I will try it and get back. Now having other issues, but on top of them. Expression Web installer is having a hissy fit because msoxmlmf.dll is not a valid windows image, go figure.

Are the running applications which perform a Search function coming across corrupted zipfiles?

What happens if you search for *.zip? Perhaps if Search completes, and you do not have many files you could remove them of the hard drive and store them on CD or elsewhere and see if WinZip can open them?

Have you tried deleting Temp files and Temporary Internet File in case you have a partially completed (downloaded or copied) zipfile?

Windows disk cleanup causes a "compressed (zipped folder)" prompt

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Explorer.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.
